Earlier this week, friend shared an article on Facebook, which I quickly posted here 8 Beers That You Should Stop Drinking Immediately, I reposted it to my three main social media channels, FB, Twitter and Google+, within hours it has been viewed over 200 times, now those numbers aren’t anything staggering but typically it takes a several days to get those kinds of numbers, mostly due to my somewhat sporadic blogging.  To make matters worse, I quickly posted it early Friday morning without the benefit of having the time to share my comments on it.   Today, I gave a quick update to the post and re-shared it with a few of my thoughts.

Over the weekend, it kept playing over in my mind. I’m on a mission to get folks to drink better beer, and I’m convinced that a significant number of folks have never really consumed good beer, let alone great beer or mind blowing beer.

So, this post I will set out to provide you with a list of alternatives craft beers that you will not only love better than anything on this list, they will certainly not contain any GMO’s or high fructose corn syrup and or carrageenan.

1. Newcastle Brown Ale
Well, I guess I’m never having a Newcastle Brown Ale again, I try to keep my carcinogen intake to a minimum.

Recommendations
US Brewery: Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale or Kona Brewing Koko Bown.
Vancouver Brewery: Howe Sound Rail Ale Nut Brown

2. Budweiser
I simply cannot even remember having my last Bud.  To be honest, I find it to be so far removed from the classification of “beer” I forget what style it fits into.  If Budweiser were a cheese, it would be closer to the wiz classification as opposed to a camembert.  Budweiser classifies this as a “pale lager”, I classify it as the gold standard of truly horrible beverages, it’s made with up to 30% rice.

Recommendations
US Brewery:
Samuel Adams Double Agent IPL

Vancouver Brewery:
Parallel 49 Brewing Company Hoparazzi

3. Corona
People associate Corona to summer, whether it’s drinking this on a beach or sitting on a patio. Pop in a lime and it just doesn’t get better than this.  Well, son, that’s what we call excellent marketing.  I now present to you a list of what I consider being the perfect summer beer; the list will span across styles because the point here is to reclaim summer back from Corona, by any means necessary.

US Breweries:
Kona Brewing Company Wailua Wheat – Belgian-Style Wit brewed with tropical passion fruit
Elysian Superfuzz – Blood Orange Pale
Deschutes Brewery Twilight Summer Ale
Deschutes Brewery Chainbreaker White IPA
Pyramid Brewing Co. Apricot Ale

Vancouver Breweries:
Parallel 49 Brewing Company Seedspitter – Belgian-style Witbier with Watermelon
Howe Sound 4 Way Fruit Ale – mango, passionfruit, raspberry, and pomegranate
How Sound You’re My Boy Blue – Blueberry Wheat Ale

4. Miller Lite
See number 2. It’s a very traditional beer with folks who hate their taste buds.

Recommendations
US Brewery:
Samuel Adams Double Agent IPL

Vancouver Brewery:
Parallel 49 Brewing Company Hoparazzi

5. Michelob Ultra
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.  I’ve included the same recommendations but at this point, if you are drinking Michelob Ultra, Miller Lite or Bud, trying almost anything else is going to be an eye-opener for you.

Recommendations
US Brewery:
Samuel Adams Double Agent IPL

Vancouver Brewery:
Parallel 49 Brewing Company Hoparazzi

6. Guinness
At one point the holy grail of beer.  Having never been to Ireland, I cannot say that I’ve had a real Guinness. This past month I ordered a Guinness while visiting Dublin Castle, I was shocked how plain it tasted, it was flavourless.

Recommendations
US Brewery:
Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout Nitro

Vancouver Brewery:
Parallel 49 Brewing Company Ugly Sweater Milk Stout Seasonal
Parallel 49 Brewing Company N2 Nitrogenated Milk Stout Seasonal

7. Coors Light
Coors Light is to beer, as Pizza Hut is to pizza. Most people think of when picturing these products, they are in fact the worst examples, destroyed by corporate America, both are so far removed from their initial concept yet have been marketing so actually to be viewed as their industry leaders.  If you’ve only have had beers from the big brewers, then you have never really had real beer.  If you say that you don’t like beer it’s likely because you’ve only have tried products from the big boys.

Recommendations
Almost anything!  Find something on the shelf that it is stacked sky-high, look for something brewed from your region of the country.

8. Pabst Blue Ribbon
God damn hipsters!

Recommendations
Again, I would encourage you to try any of my recommendations or visit a local smaller brewery in your area. Ask questions and try new things.  Explore the world of options. The original article stated that you should stay away from “American beers,” this is completely incorrect, you should stay away from beers produced by massive corporations. The US has hundreds of smaller craft breweries which are producing world class beer which is chemical free and do not contain any additives or artificial ingredients.

These are just a small sampling of the options out there.  I invite you to add to this list in the comments.  I want to hear your suggestions, let’s help the unfamiliar get familiar with craft beer, share a pint with friends and #DrinkBetterBeer
